Creating Family Harmony Through Tanka description:
Speech and language expert Katsumi Okabe has devoted much of his professional research to the exploration of innovative educational modalities, especially in the treatment and rehabilitation of persons with disabilities. Cultural activities such as the creation or appreciation of artwork and poetry can be emotionally rewarding for disabled patients and their families, helping them regain their sense of humanity. Tanka—a short form of Japanese poetry with five lines—evokes a moment or marks an occasion and is older than Haiku. In Creating Family Harmony Through Tanka, Okabe discusses the benefits writing, reading, and enjoying this ancient Japanese poetry form can have in facilitating a disabled person's recovery, and a family's ability to assist in the process.
