Laughter Wasn't Rationed description:
This memoir of Germany from the Weimar Republic to the construction of the
Berlin Wall introduces readers to a totally different side of Germany's
history.

It provides a rare glimpse of the life of a German housewife -- who is not a
Nazi, not a Jew -- going through the tumultuous times of Hitler's rise to
power, World War II, and the Soviet and American occupation of Berlin. The
relatively carefree years of her youth are followed by bombings, starvation
and other day-to-day struggles.

Dorothea Lawson gives a first-hand account written in an entertaining style,
which includes jokes about the Third Reich. Her story is accompanied by 42
photographs.

Editorial reviews:
Don Snyder, The Star Newspapers:
"Lawson's life is almost the history of the 20th century...a must read for anyone like me, a World War II history buff."

Gale Curcio, The Mount Vernon Gazette:
"This poignant recollection reads like a novel. What happened to middle and upper-class Germans may come as a surprise to many."

H. Woehler, Oxford, Alabama:
"A totally different outlook on the whole world war era. It has been a long time that a book has fascinated me as much as this one did."
