Kings and Queens description:
In Kings and Queens a diverse group of LGBTs talk about their proms
and their lives since to create an oral and visual history that shows how
being an LGBT teen has and has not changed in the past 75 years. The
book, which will include prom photos and artifacts within a
yearbook-inspired design, taps into the sugary appeal of this century-old
rite of passage to grab the attention of today’s prom-goers and the
millions that came before.
The book offers an anecdotal gay history and context for queer lives. Since
gay history is not part of the school curriculum, many queers are unaware
of prominent gays before Ellen DeGeneres. While hardly a definitive or
complete retelling of gay past, Kings and Queens fills in many of the gaps
and suggests how growing up gay has and has not changed over the
years.
For friends and relatives of gays, Kings and Queens is a chance to better
understand what it feels like to grow up gay and how that impacts, in both
obvious and subtle ways, one’s entire life. For all of us, the book will
challenge the stereotypes and prejudices we harbor — and not just those
associated with homosexuality.
