| Richard R. Blake for Reader Views: | Author Nick Castanis has finely crafted this well-written western fiction novel based life on the American frontier during the years following the Civil War. Castanis has done an exceptional job of presenting detailed historical background information. This sense of authenticity helps the reader identify with the characters and makes the plot realistic.
Eliot Stewart and his partner Rafer left Texas to find work. They were hired as wranglers working for a Spanish Don, who owned over 20,000 acres in New Mexico. This fast moving drama includes all the ingredients of a modern day Western with gun battles, drunken brawls, rogues and their women, the local saloon, hotel, and brothel.
Castanis paints a dramatic picture of the rugged and harsh life of the frontiersman. He gives insight into the political climate of the era, and into the culture of the North American Indian who had settled in the southwest. Justice was often served by the sheriff, his posse, or by the man with the fastest draw.
Nick’s writing involves all the five senses. I tasted the grit of dust as I trailed the herd. I heard the howling of the coyote in the still of the night. I felt an adrenaline rush, my heart racing, and the hair on the nape of my neck prickle as I unsheathed my Winchester lever action and held it in the ready. I smelled the scent of jasmine perfume drifting toward me as Maria approached me. I was enthralled by the image of the Black Mountains in the sacred country of the Mescalero Apache Indians.
Castanis' narrative is animated, his characters are genuine, the dialogue has substance, and the plot is believable. I found the book to be a thoroughly enjoyable historic novel of the old west. Readers of all ages will be entertained, informed and kept in suspense as the plot unfolds, to bring “Justice West of the Pecos.”
