This book is a partly fictional rumble through the history of the New York City Metropolitan Transit Authority that focuses on the decades of the sixties and seventies when the work force changed from Irish-American to African-American and the struggle to control the leadership of Local 100 of the Transport Workers Union. The ride is engrossing - witty, bumpy and on time.
This is a "Historical Fiction" in which the author paints a vivid portrait of the courageous founder of the TWU. He contrasts that up with a nostalgic narrative of the daily lives of transit workers on and off the job.
