Stretched But Not Broken description:
|
|
|
All Mia wanted out of life was a peaceful existence and unconditional love. But from age five, when she was brutally raped by a deranged homeless man, Mia had experienced everything but her dream. Her mother, Helen, a quiet and dignified woman, marries a concerned but drug addicted Vietnam Veteran whose controlling and abusive parenting skills turn Mia’s family on its ear.
Karen, Mia’s older sister, is nothing like her compliant mother and sister. She is brash, loud, and not afraid to cry out when in pain. Karen is later diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Her overbearing and controlling personality knuckle Mia under her spell, causing Mia to begrudgingly acquiesce to Karen’s every command. Helen also caters to Karen’s manipulative ways making Mia believe that Helen cares more for Karen than she does for Mia and her younger sister, (fathered by Bruce) Sasha.
Through a life of kept secrets, silence in the face of abusive oppression, and a broken romance, Mia is driven to attempt suicide. But Mia has a friend, Julie, who has been telling Mia about the love of God and how much he has in store for Mia’s life and future. Mia must then make a decision to let go of her past, and stretch toward a bright and loving future with a Savior who proves to be the only answer to Mia’s shredded life of fear, anguish, and hopelessness.

| Xulon Press: | Tawana Jackson's debut, Stretched But Not Broken ($15.99, paperback, 978-1-60477-640-9), is a compelling, emotional, and uplifting read about one woman overcoming overwhelming obstacles. It chronicles the story of Mia Hall who, after being raped at five years old and emotionally abandoned by a loving but depressed mother, grows into a compliant woman who enables the bipolar and controlling abuses of her older sister, Karen, and her stepfather, Bruce. Through a life of kept secrets, silence in the face of abusive oppression, and a broken romance, Mia is driven to attempt suicide. But when Mia's friend, Julie, tells her about the love of God and how much He has in store for her life and future, she must then make a decision to let go of her past and pursue a bright and loving future with a Savior who proves to be the only answer to her life of fear, anguish, and hopelessness.
As the author's first foray into the literary genre, Stretched But Not Broken represents the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. Jackson's heady appetite for Christian fiction novels led her to read many of them over the years, but one thing she discovered was that few of them brought out raw emotion and self-conviction such as hers has.
Says Jackson, "This book speaks to those who have suffered mental and physical abuse, as well as, those who have been imprisoned by drug addiction and mental illness. I have personally lived every aspect of this novel, from being an abused child to [possessing] the sexual morality that corrupts a person's body. Everything I write about comes from experience as well as God-given creativity."

| APOOO Book Club: | "Stretched but not Broken" chronicles the story of Mia Hall and her dysfunctional family. Mia, raped at the tender age of five, grew up with a mother that was emotionally unavailable because she suffered from depression. A step-father that was emotionally as well as physically abusive to her and her siblings. She also had and older sister, Karen, that is bi-polar and abuses her children. Her younger sister, Sasha, is just so fed up with all the chaos within the family and she is determined to get out by joining the ROTC and going into the army. When Mia's sister, Karen, takes things to far involving her children, everyone's life is flipped upside down.
This was a fast paced and refreshing read. The writing just flowed so naturally. I am sure you can see someone you know in one of these characters, the story was so raw and real, makes me wonder if this wast based on a true story. If so, I really applaud the author for overcoming such huge obstacles. In my opinion, this is one of those books that everyone should read.

| Toni Hurlston: | This was a page turner by far! The story was well written and vividly lush in details. It kept me interested and made me believe the vulnerability of the people in the book.
The character Mia's struggle to find her inner being was very endearing. I have recommend this book to all of my family and friends.

| Elizabeth Gerald: | | This book is a must read. I am a business owner and time is limited and of the essence for me. Therefore after a long day at the office I do not want to come home and pick-up another piece of paper, book or open mail for that matter. Once I picked up this book--the words and characters became real and there was no turning back accept to wipe the food marks off the pages. I could not put it down....I invite you all to pick up a copy and bless someone else with a copy. |
